Colorado Vacation - 2004

Day 1 -  Off-Roadin' With Pop

Thursday, August 26th

Turret Ghost Town

I got to the cabin in Poncha Springs (just west of Salida) early afternoon on Thursday. Lounged around for a while, to shake off the three hour car ride from Colorado Springs. It also gave me a chance to catch up with Mom and Dad, as well as my cousin Carol and her husband Glen.

They had been at the cabin for the previous two weeks, and dad had pretty much already gotten all the interest in 4 wheeling from them that he was going to get. So he was pretty excited to find a partner in crime for more excursions into the backcountry.

For that afternoon, we decided to run up to Turret. It's a small ghost town just east of Salida, an easy 30 minutes run from the cabin. We have been to Turret many times through the years, and have seen it recently being subdivided and sold as cabin lots. We hadn't been back in the last two years, to see how things have been developed. There were some new cabins, and some of the existing structures appeared to have been rehabed.

One of the original structures in Turret, sporting a new roof and other signs that this building will be seeing a new life.  One of the new cabins that have been built in the township. Looks pretty nice, it's also for sale.

Another of the new cabins, this one is pretty good sized. By the way, there is no electric service up here, I saw several solar panels behind some of the cabins.  Another of the original structures. It's nice to see that they are attempting to preserve these. There are definitely less here than when we first found this place in the early 80's.

Another new cabin, with the remains of an old structure just to the left of it. I believe that this was built on the same site that a red cabin sat on for many years. Wonder what happened to it?  Shot of the road to Turret and the rocky outcroppings that surround this area. The county road that goes to Turret is not considered 4wd, but you better have a high clearance vehicle if you try to make it.
